We are delighted to announce that applications to perform at the 2018 Encontro Street Band Festival in Glasgow are now OPEN!

Following a fantastic pilot festival in July 2017, we are very happy to be staging the event as part of Merchant City Festival once again. We are also delighted that our wee festival is growing! It will take place over 3 days from Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th August (as part of the Cultural Programme for the European Championships 2018).

We welcome applications from the full spectrum of street-performing bands. From samba & Brazilian-influenced to marching band, street brass and carnival music of all persuasions; from tribal drums to global sounds - traditional, folkloric, urban, or none-of-the-above… all are welcome!

Applications are open NOW and will close at 5pm on Friday 1st December. We will let groups know by 15th January if they have been selected.

The Encontro Street band festival 2018 will include a youth programme, 2 days of performances in the streets, a Saturday night showcase gig, a small programme of workshops, and opportunities to perform in specially-commissioned Massed Band collaborations. The scale of some of these elements is still funding dependent. However, we can guarantee a brilliant weekend packed not only with fantastic performance opportunities in front of great crowds, but also with plenty of opportunities to see and connect with other bands and players, make music informally, try something new, broaden your horizons and go home full of energy and inspiration!

Please note – we have a huge challenge around accommodation for our 2018 event because it coincides with the European Championships, which will bring large numbers of people into Glasgow for the first 2 weeks in August (athletes, sports people, media, performers, visitors etc). As a result, we are trying to secure as much accommodation as we can now. This will be a mix of hostel dorms, SYBnB (beds and floor spaces in the homes of SambYaBamba and friends) and gym hall accommodation, Coburg style (roll mats on the floor)! It will probably be difficult and expensive to arrange your own accommodation, so we’ll do everything we can to make sure you have a place to stay for the weekend. Just fill in your preferences on the form below.

We have capacity for around 25 bands to attend the festival, and this will include paid showcase acts, subsidised bands (receiving a bursary towards costs) and self-funding bands. Please select the option (or options) that suit your band best – full details are below.

Please tell us below how you see your band fitting in to our programme

Acts with an outstanding stage show – apply here! The performance should be suitable for a ticketed public audience, showcasing excellence in the given artform and performed in a venue with full PA (on Sat 5th August). We are also interested in hearing from groups with an outstanding outdoor show to offer. We can pay a fee, plus contribution towards travel and, if necessary, a contribution towards accommodation costs (if the gym hall option doesn’t suit your band).

We’d love to hear from bands who are experienced at playing in the street and entertaining large crowds. We can make a contribution towards travel and accommodation, but please be aware that this may not cover all costs (we’ll do our best though!)

We know there are bands out there who want to be part of the festival, and can find ways to raise the funds themselves. We want to hear from you! We can work with you to make sure all band members are accommodated for the weekend.

Please tell us about your accommodation needs. We won’t be able to provide beds for all players attending the festival due to the lack of accommodation in the city during early August. Opting for gym hall accommodation may make it easier for us to include your band in the programme.
